Agricultural Safety & Health Center
Each year, the Agricultural Safety & Health Center at Empire Farm Days provides practical information and hands-on activities to promote safe and healthy lifestyles for visitors from farms and rural areas. An exciting new addition to the Center this year will be daily demonstrations of safe operation of ATV’s, chain saws, mowing equipment and garden tractors. SAFE & SECURE: A safety workshop to teach young people -- and their parents -- how to operate safely many small machines found on farms and around rural homes. Demonstrations and hands-on activities show participants how to avoid the hazards of operating small machines and equipment.

Returning for the second year, will be an exhibit by OSHA addressing worker safety and one providing information on agricultural truck regulations sponsored by the NYS Dept. of Transportation. At the Operation Lifesaver exhibit you can view the outcome of a train vs. snowmobile crash “up close and personal” while getting some important prevention information.

The NYS Breast Cancer and Environmental Risk Factors (BCERF) program will provide materials on up-to-date research related to current health issues. The NYS Department of Health exhibit will provide information on the safe use of pesticides, injury prevention measures for farmers and loggers, and the network of state occupational health clinics available to treat people with work-related illnesses.

The New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH) will present the “Tractor Safety Challenge” – test your ability to identify the safety features on tractors. NYCAMH will also be offering recommendations on proper personal protective equipment (PPE) fitting and use. PPE will also be available for purchase.

Cornell Agricultural Health & Safety Program’s exhibit will focus on personal, family, and farm planning for emergencies. The NY AgrAbility Project which assists farmers/workers with disabilities, who wish to continue farming, will highlight tractor cab modifications currently available for people with disabilities. In addition, the Cornell Farmedic Training Program will feature current training opportunities and a chance to meet some of the New York Instructors and view the new materials.

NYCAMH (New York Center for Agricultural Medicine & Health)
Farming is the second most dangerous job in the United States. There are over 150,000 disabling injuries among agricultural workers and over 700 farm fatalities reported annually. Tractors are involved in approximately one-half of these fatalities.
